In Memoriam: Octavio "Ratinho" Couto
Octavio “Ratinho” Couto, a distinguished 6th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, remains an enduring legend in the world of martial arts. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of practitioners. With an impressive background in the realm of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Octavio was widely recognized as one of the most esteemed coaches globally.
Originally hailing from the Alliance team, Octavio was part of the remarkable group of seven black belts who came together to form Team Brasa in 2002. His dedication to his craft was matched only by his commitment to education, having earned a college degree and fluency in four languages. Octavio’s profound expertise extended beyond the mats, as he played an instrumental role in developing the application of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu principles for the Italian Carabinieri (police). He also taught self-defense to airline companies and the police in Brazil.
Among his many accomplishments, Octavio co-founded and meticulously crafted the curriculum and operational framework at AKXE BJJ, a prestigious academy located in Rio de Janeiro, which stands as a testament to his influence on the sport.
While Octavio has left us, his spirit and teachings live on through his global seminars, where he imparted the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to countless enthusiasts. Although he has ventured far and wide, he always found his way back to his beloved Octagon MMA, where he continued to share his knowledge, instructing classes and conducting seminars approximately once a month.
In his memory, we honor Octavio “Ratinho” Couto’s enduring contributions to the world of martial arts. While he may no longer be with us, his legacy remains vibrant, and his teachings continue to impact the lives of martial artists around the world.
